About three years ago, Lauren Scruggs, a beautiful young lady—an aspiring model—accidentally walked into the propeller of an airplane. Her devastating injuries resulted in the loss of her left eye and arm. I can only imagine some of the things that might have been going through her mind in the days, weeks and months after the accident. Through my personal relationship with her family, I know that Lauren is a follower of Jesus Christ. And even though God didn’t prevent her accident, it is obvious that He has been with her throughout her trial.
A recent article on the Internet about noteworthy marriages in the past year mentioned Lauren’s marriage last December 12th to E! News host Jason Kennedy. The article mentioned that a number of celebrities were present at their wedding, including Kathie Lee Gifford, Giuliana and Bill Rancic as well as Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and his wife Candice. Her husband Jason was quoted as saying “Lauren changed everything for me and I can’t believe I get to spend the rest of my life with her.”
Such a heartwarming conclusion to a tragic incident! Her faith and courage are a powerful testimony of God’s faithfulness to His promise in Romans 8:28: We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose. I expand on this promise in Principle #16:
No matter the circumstances of life, we are to take comfort in the fact that we are secure in Christ, now and eternally. When Paul penned this final section in Romans 8, he wanted all believers to know that they are secure in Christ . . . .
Paul believed that when he arrived in heaven, everything that happened to him—including evil actions—would be for his good and the good of the gospel . . . .How can we explain all the evil actions in this world that impact innocent people, including children? We cannot. We can only trust God, knowing that someday we will understand.
None of us knows what the future will bring. Thankfully, we don’t have to worry about the future. We are in good hands!
